The 2017 Alaska Branch Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, will be held in Anchorage on Oct 20-21, 2017. This year's guest lecturer will be Dr. Melanie Mormile from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. She will give two lectures, including “Are There Martians in Australia? How Acid Saline Lakes Can Serve as a Mars Analog”. In addition to Dr. Mormile, we will have Dr. Michael Lee from the University of Oklahoma. We plan to have a one-night event tentatively titled, "Microbe Mayhem: The Science of Science Fiction", in which we screen a classic sci-fi film involving microbes (exact film TBD). Then, Dr. Lee will lead a panel discussion about the film itself and the science facts and fictions it contains.  There will be opportunities for students, postdocs, faculty etc. to present talks and posters. More details will come as time approaches. Website:http://web.mst.edu/~mmormile/
